Contour/Fitted Diapers

Contour diapers are slightly more complicated than pocket diapers or all-in-one diapers because they
require two pieces.  Generally contour diapers are made of cotton, bamboo, or a combination of absorbent
materials.  They range in sizes from Newborn to X-Large based on your child’s height and weight.  These
diapers are form-fitting so they are trimmer than a one-size diaper and they are contoured to your
child's body, unlike a prefold diaper.

Contour diapers can have hook and loop closures (similar to Velcro) or snaps.  Because there is no
waterproof outer layer, a
cover is placed over the diaper to hold in the wetness.  When it is time to
change your child, it is not necessary to change the cover unless it is soiled.  Only the inner diaper needs
to be changed every time.  Some outer covers even have wipe-clean surfaces, so very few covers are
needed.

While this diapering system can be slightly more complicated, it is an economical way to cloth diaper your
baby.  Also, since diapers and covers come in a variety of colors and prints, it can be a fun and exciting
way to diaper your baby!

Caring for Your Fitted Diapers

There are many different opinions about how to best care for your diapers, but the general idea is this:
  • One short wash cycle—cold water—1/2 of manufacturer’s recommended detergent
  • One long wash cycle—hot water—1/2 of manufacturer’s recommended detergent
  • Put your diapers in the sun as much as possible to remove stains and smells
  • Use the dryer only when air drying is not possible– this will help your diapers last longer
  • If your diapers start to smell, you can try adding 1/4 cup of white vinegar during the rinse (use a
fabric softener dispensing ball or your machine’s fabric softener dispenser).  You can also try
adding a squirt of original blue Dawn dish soap (yes, it has to be Dawn) instead of laundry
    detergent during the hot wash.
  • Another possible source of smelly diapers is soap buildup.  If this happens, run hot washes without
detergent until you do not see soap bubbles in the rinse cycle.  This could take 3-4 hot washes to
    remove buildup.
