| Pocket Diapers Pocket diapers are, in our opinion, the most hassle-free way to cloth diaper your baby. Pocket diapers have two layers: a waterproof outer “cover” and an inner lining to draw moisture away from your baby’s skin. A pocket is formed between the two layers in which an insert is placed. Insert Choice A thin insert can be used for very small babies, or a larger, thicker insert can be used for a larger child or for a heavy wetter. There are many choices for insert materials, but generally parents choose microfiber or hemp. Hemp is more absorbent, but also more expensive. It is recommended that you begin with a thin microfiber insert and progressively “stuff” more into your diapers as your child grows. Diaper Closures Pocket diapers either have hook and loop (similar to Velcro) or snap closures. While a hook and loop fastener is more convenient and user-friendly, snap closures generally stand up to lots of use for longer. DiaperVine recommends a mixture of both—hook and loop closures for outings or Grandma days, and snap closures that will last for years to come! Caring for Your Pocket Diapers There are many different opinions about how to best care for your diapers, but the general idea is this:
One Size vs. Perfect Size Diapers can be fitted, meaning they have several different sizes based on your baby’s weight, or you can choose a one-size diaper that will grow with your baby. One-size diapers have adjustable snaps and/or elastic that make them very cost effective because they will grow with your child from birth to potty training. While one-size diapers are overall much less expensive, they can be bulky on a very small baby, which is sometimes a drawback for parents.
