Prefold Diapers

If you’re looking for the most economical way to diaper your baby, prefolds are perfect for you!  A prefold
diaper is similar to what your grandmother used and what we often use as burp cloths or baby rags today.
These diapers must be folded and covered with a waterproof diaper cover to contain any messes.  When it’s
time to change your baby, if the cover is not soiled, it can simply be reused instead of washing it every
change.  While prefold diapers take a little more work to fold, they are by far the most economical choice
for cloth diapering.  This method of diapering can be intimidating at first due to the extra steps required,
but many parents say they’d never diaper any other way!

Caring for Your  Prefold Diapers
There are many different opinions about how to best care for your diapers, but the general idea is this:
  • One short wash cycle—cold water—1/2 of manufacturer’s recommended detergent
  • One long wash cycle—hot water—1/2 of manufacturer’s recommended detergent
  • Put your diapers in the sun as much as possible to remove stains and smells
  • If your diapers start to smell, you can try adding 1/4 cup of white vinegar during the rinse (use a
fabric softener dispensing ball or your machine’s fabric softener dispenser).  You can also try
adding a squirt of original blue Dawn dish soap (yes, it has to be Dawn) instead of laundry detergent
    during the hot wash.
  • Another possible source of smelly diapers is soap buildup.  If this happens, run hot washes without
detergent until you do not see soap bubbles in the rinse cycle.  This could take 3-4 hot washes to
    remove buildup.

Folding
Many parents think that prefold diapers require a complex folding routine.  Not true!!  You can simply fold
your diaper into thirds and lay it in a waterproof cover.  Many covers even have tabs to help hold the diaper
in place.  This makes prefolds a super easy and economical way to cloth diaper!

Quality
A word of warning:  Not all prefolds are created equally.  DiaperVine recommends that you always choose a
high quality prefold diaper in order to avoid leaks and skin irritation.  A   high-quality prefold diaper will
last for years to come and will be an investment you won’t regret!
